CHAVUROT NEWS...

Chavura…"A Fellowship of Friends", or, "a group of people"

Chavurot…more than one Chavura, or, "groups of people"

Welcome to the exciting world of TBS Chavurot! Temple Beth Sholom adopted the concept several years ago with the idea of becoming a catalyst and sponsor of groups of Temple members with common interests. It orchestrated the formation and support of several such Chavurot. Ideally, a Chavura provides support, celebration, companionship, and study opportunities for its members. It is a great way to make new friends and feel more a part of our Jewish community.
Each Chavura is unique, and the common thread is the Jewish community in general, and Temple Beth Sholom in particular. The Chavura reflects the collective virtues of its members, and its activities are chosen and carried out by the members. Each one plans its own activities and operates independently. Your Chavura can become an extended family for you and your family - you can share holidays, get together for social get together at home, go out (to eat, to plays and movies, to Shul, play a sports or other games, study and learn together). Why, the list is only limited by your own imagination! We have Chavurot for couples and others for singles.

Current news:We have new groups forming on an ongoing basis. To receive a Chavurah Form or to get more information, please contact Myrna Hills in the Temple Beth Sholom office at 804-1333, ext. 100

CHEVRA KADISHA "A Sacred Society"

There is a unique group in Jewish society. It is called the Chevra Kadisha. Have you ever heard of it? Do you know what it does? That just goes to show you how unique it is!

Its origins, at least in part, stem from the Talmudic passage: "Rabbi Simlai lectured: Torah begins and ends with acts of lovingkindness...It concludes with an act of kindness, as is written (Deut.): 'And He buried him (Moses) in the valley.'" (Sotah 14A).

The work of the Chevra Kadisha is most beautiful and full of meaning. Judaism is predicated on the belief in an after-life where men and women will receive their ultimate eternal reward after appearing before Him for their final judgment - their final Yom Kippur. A second accepted belief is that while the soul (neshama) departs from the body upon death, it nevertheless remains nearby, fully aware of what transpires to the body and around it.

The task of the Chevra Kadisha, is to, with prayers and deep spiritual respect, care for the body, in its final washing and dressing process (tahara). It matters not whether the deceased had been a practicing Jew, whether he or she was Orthodox, Conservative or Reform, with or without affiliation. A Jew deserves a physical burial process echoing the magnificence and splendor of our culture and traditions.

Certainly the thought of death is not a pleasant one to consider. But consider it we must. We are most fortunate to have here, at Temple Beth Sholom, and in concert with Temple Midbar Kodesh, a dedicated group of men and women, unselfishly sharing their spirituality and lovingkindness with those who, in time of great need and distress, require their thoughts, words and actions.

MENS CLUB OF TEMPLE BETH SHOLOM

A recently energized Men's Club at Temple Beth Sholom has evolved into a dynamic organization, with a fundamental purpose of assisting the needs of the congregation in every way possible. The club was founded more than 50 years ago, but since it became affiliated with the Conservative movement's Federation of Jewish Men's Clubs in September 2001, our Men's Club has embarked on a major campaign of stimulating religious, social and cultural activities both within the temple and throughout the Jewish community.

Easily identified by the wearing of the Red Kippah, members of the Men's Club are truly dedicated to supporting the ideals of Judaism and how they translate into programs that benefit Temple Beth Sholom. Moreover, the Men's Club has become actively involved in expanding its horizons to meet a full range of family and community needs. For example, the recently updated by-laws of the Temple Beth Sholom Men's Club state that the purpose of the organization shall be to:

  • Promote a more thorough knowledge and appreciation of Jewish life.
  • Stimulate social and cultural activities among members and in the community.
  • Encourage youth activities and affiliations.
  • Strengthen the involvement of the members in the life of the congregation.
  • Be a charitable service organization.
  • Train knowledgeable leaders for the temple and the Jewish community.

Among its fund-raising activities, our Men's Club is particularly proud of its sponsorship of a Warsaw Ghetto Memorial, a solemn tribute to the six million Jews who perished in the Holocaust. In addition, the club supports and administers our annual Yom Hashoah Yellow Candle Program. Annual dues for each member is $36, of which $11 is paid to the Jewish Federation of Men's Clubs. A variety of activities helps the club to elicit funds so that it can assist the temple and other Jewish causes in many ways. For example, the Men's Club has made recent financial contributions to improve safety devices in pre-school classrooms; helps sponsor an annual picnic or the religious school; buys equipment for pre-schoolers, gifts for all who are called to their bar/bat mitzvah and gifts for couples at their Uf Rufs. The Men's Club recently made a significant contribution to Israel's Magen David Adom, to help purchase an ambulance.

The Men’s Club holds its general membership meetings on the third Wednesday evening of each month, and all members of Temple Beth Sholom are invited to attend. Meetings include discussion of a variety of social and cultural issues, including a guest speaker. For more information, contact Marlowe Mogill, Men’s Club President at mbmogill@cox.net

WOMEN’S LEAGUE OF TEMPLE BETH SHOLOM

The Women’s League, a driving force in Temple Beth Sholom, is affiliated with Women’s League for Conservative Judaism, the national organization of Conservative Sisterhoods. Our dedication is constant to the perpetuation of traditional Judaism in the home, synagogue and the community, along with the continuing education and involvement in a myriad of Synagogue activities. As we provide Temple Beth Sholom with service and fiscal support, and involve ourselves in the greater Jewish world, we experience personal growth, cultural enrichment and educational advancement along with building lasting relationships and friendships. We enhance our families through life-cycle experiences and transmit our heritage and traditions to our children and grandchildren.

We offer the following on-going opportunities for enrichment and involvement through monthly meetings and programs. Z’HAVA, the young woman’s group of Women’s League meets each month in private homes.
Our fund raising is primarily through the Judaica Shop; Personal "Tributes" which appear in the Vision; The Hanukkah Boutique and by the purchase of Prayer Books and Chumashim. Dues are $36 for Temple Members - $50 for non-Temple Members and include a subscription to the Outlook Magazine. For information contact Kim Memar, Women’s League President memarkfas@cox.net
